Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Rail System
Clean, punctual and air-conditioned, the
MRT is a hallmark of efficiency. Operating
hours:
From 6.00 am to midnight at frequencies of 3 to 8 minutes. Note: There are fines
for littering, smoking, eating and drinking in MRT stations and on board
the trains.
There are two operators of MRT train services:
1. SMRT - running the North-South
& East-West Lines
2. SBS-Transit - running the
new North-East
Line (from 20 June 2003)

1 to
2 cents increase in bus fares and no increase in rail
fares |

The PTC approved a 1 to 2 cent increase in
adult EZ-Link fares for buses. Senior citizen concessionary EZ-Link bus
fares, which are flat fares pegged to the lowest adult EZ-Link fare band
will also increase by 2 cents... |

There will be no increase to all rail
fares, some EZLink adult bus fares, as well as cash fares for
buses, child/student fares and the prices of monthly student/NS
men concession passes... |

A Chinese man in
his mid-40s died last night after he was hit by a train at
Chinese Garden MRT station. The man had reportedly flung
himself into the path of an oncoming train. |

Man jailed for
bomb hoax |

A man was jailed for 2˝ years yesterday for
a bomb hoax. Mak Hoy Meng, 29, had handed
over to an MRT employee two notes which
claimed there was a bomb in one of the
stations. |

Safety
at MRT and LRT stations |

"Despite
the various safety measures in place, there have been more
than 220 cases, where commuters were found trespassing on
the tracks at above-ground MRT and LRT stations, between
1991 and 15 September 2004. |

"Eighty-seven
percent of such cases were non-accidental acts, which
involved commuters jumping onto the tracks to retrieve
personal items, walking, running or taking short cuts to
another platform, and acts of suicide....." |
