Singapore's
newest Junior College opens today. Meridian Junior College,
costing almost S$50 million, starts with 700 students, a
quarter of whom scored 15 points or less, at a 6 ha site in Pasir
Ris. It is the first school to have a library that is designed and
managed by the National Library Board. (Straits

The
National Library Board (NLB) yesterday launched the Born To Read,
Read To Bond programme to promote reading from young and bring
families together. Nine hospitals are involved in the year-long
project. About 50,000 mothers of newborn children in the hospitals
will receive packs containing parenting tips, nursery rhymes, a
list of recommended books, a library guide and membership
registration forms. The babies will get a uniquely-designed
membership card if their parents register them and borrow four
books.

The
new 10-storey National Library in Victoria Street will be opened
in three years. The building, designed by Malaysian architect Ken
Yeang and costing S$200 million, has an area of 60,000 sq m, six
times bigger than the present one in Stamford Road. It will have
six storeys of book-lined rooms, three basements, a cafe, a
400-seat auditorium for concerts, and an open plaza. (Straits

More
than 24,000 titles from the National Library Board's (NLB)
collection of e-books, e-magazines, CD-Roms and videos are now
available online. The e-LibraryHub at www.elibraryhub.com,
launched yesterday, will offer the content direct to home and
office computers with an Internet connection. Membership in the
eLibraryHub is free. (Straits

National Library
members can now return borrowed books at a 24-hour counter at
Capital Tower in Robinson Road. The National Library Board will
collect the books and magazines from the Maybank Autolobby at
10.30am from Monday to Saturday, except on public holidays. The
loans will be cleared by 1pm on the next working day. The remote
bookdrop, probably the first here, can hold up to 300 books and
magazines. The service is on trial for a year.

Original
manuscripts, pictures and other materials of pioneer Chinese
literary writers here are being collected for permanent display at
the new National Library building. The Singapore Literature
Society, an association of Chinese-language writers, is helping
the National Library Board collect and research these pieces. When
the new library building in Victoria Street is completed by the
end of 2003, the materials would be displayed in a permanent area
on contemporary Singapore literature. The collection would also
include pioneer writers in the Malay and Tamil languages. (Straits

Woodlands
Regional Library opens on Saturday 28 Apr 2001. Occupying
11,100 square metres of the Woodlands Civic Centre, the library
is the nation's first full-fledged regional library, featuring
collections, facilities, services and programmes befitting a
one-stop information and reference centre in the northern sector
of Singapore |

will be unveiled on Saturday, 28 Apr 2001. It replaces the
NL.Line. |

2000
A new National
Library building in Victoria Street, next to the Bras Basah Complex,
will be completed by the end of 2003. When ready, it will have
facilities, such as teahouses for informal meetings, a good collection
of books on the Arts and page-turning devices for the disabled.
Children in Hainan, a small
province in China, will get about 1000 old library books donated by the
National Library Board (NLB). The books are among 25,000 volumes donated
to 24 non-profit and community service organisations on 14 Jul 2000.
