Founded in 1919. Philanthropist TAN Kah Kee first proposed the idea of the school back in 1913. However, it did not get off the ground for another six years because of a lack of money.

Opened with 78 pupils at a bungalow in Niven Road.

Moved to an 80-acre site off Bukit Timah Road in 1925.

Shut down temporarily in 1931 when the communist-influenced student body clashed with school management.

Closed by the colonial government in 1932. 29 students were arrested and convicted for demonstrating. This led to the resignation of every teacher in the school.

Reopened in 1934.

Became a battle ground in October 1956 when students clashed with the police in one of the worst riots the island has ever experienced - it ended with 13 deaths.
