'Sex and the City' coming to Singapore next month

Hi folks

This week's Monday has come a little earlier than usual. That's because we want to share with you chaps a bit of news - not confirmed locally yet, though - that that raunchy sitcom, Sex and the City, is finally making its way to Singapore.

What we hear is that the show will air on 16 Jul 2004. In all eight shows from the 5th series will be shown and the 20-episode 6th series may follow in mid August 2004. But, we should expect some cuts here and there.

That the show should finally be allowed in Singapore attests to the loosening of censorship standards to generate greater artistic space in a practical and gradual manner.

On 10 Jul 2003, after receiving feedback from the public, the Censorship Review Committee submitted its recommendations to the Government. Among these was one asking that greater leeway be given to content for adults, such as Cosmopolitan magazine and the TV series Sex and the City, through suitable channels.

This recommendation came under the Sexual Content and Nudity paragraph in the CRC's recommendations. Here is a quote of the paragraph:

- Allow greater leeway to non-exploitative sex and nudity relevant to the context in content for adults. But, continue to impose stricter standards for such content in public space.

- Allow adults access to magazines such as Cosmopolitan and programmes such as Sex and the City through suitable distribution channels.

There has been no official word locally about the debut of Sex and the City in Singapore, but news reports have appeared elsewhere around the world. For copyright reasons we are unable to reproduce the news stories here. However, here are links to some of them:

Sex And The City Back To Back Special (Ep 67-68) 10:30 PM - 11:30PM on Friday 16 July 2004 on HBO StarHub.

Ep 67

From man to Manhattan, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) comes to the spellbinding conclusion that her true love must be The Big Apple. Samantha (Kim Cattrall) contemplates letting Richard back into her life, but knows she's no saint. Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) thinks that perhaps she isn't ready to trade in the freedom of single life for motherhood. Meanwhile, Charlotte (Kirsten Davis) is having a wild time at a Fleet Week bash.

Ep 68

Steve wants Brady baptized, despite Miranda's objections. Richard wants Samantha to practice selective amnesia and forget his past misgivings. What say you, girls? And while a seminar may not have the power the change millions of lives, it sure has the power to make two single women think about theirs. Charlotte and Carrie start contemplating their personal lives. Not a great step forward for single women.
