instinc presents "Inspirations" 26 May- 9 June 2006
27 May 2006, Artist's Talk
Artist Kay Goldfinch's watercolour paintings of shophouses of Singapore as well as of shoes from the ancient art of Chinese foot binding will be presented in an exhibition at instinc from 26 May to 9 Jun 2006.
About the Artist
Kay Goldfinch was born in Sydney and holds dual Australian and New Zealand citizenship. She has been working as both a painter and a potter for over 20 years.
Kay has undertaken a number of formal and informal educational programs including classes at Monash University in Melbourne, Invelocky House Art School in Wellington and several workshops in Singapore.
Kay has exhibited her art both in Australia and New Zealand. Notably the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and the Wellington Water Color Society plus a number of private exhibitions.
As an artist Kay has gained inspiration from a number of the well-known impressionist and post impressionist artists. But of all, Matisse has had the most influence on her work, especially his use of color and the detail that he was able to project in his work.
Kay¡¯s art is very much a reflection of where she is living. In the late 1990¡¯s her work reflected the time she had spent in France where she had the opportunity to paint full-time for all of 1997. During this period her work reflected the village life of the South of France. Now having spent three years living in Singapore she has gained inspiration from this Asian experience.
About the exhibition
The paintings in 'Inspirations' exhibition are in watercolor. Kay also paints in oils and pastels.
For this latest exhibition, titled ¡®Inspirations¡¯ Kay has focused on the shophouses of Singapore including the shophouse instinc is in, (10 paintings jn total) and shoes from the ancient art of Chinese foot binding (6 paintings in total).
To Kay the shophouses are as Singaporean as the doorways are to provencal France. They offer an insight into the lives of the traditional occupants. In both cases it is the color and intricate detail that has attracted Kay.

Kay was also drawn to painting the shoes because of the exquisite embroidery and detail of their design, making them art pieces in themselves. It is these factors plus the sensuality placed on the beauty of the feet by the Chinese male that has moved Kay to paint these shoes.
The exhibition is rounded off by 6 collage works reflecting all things Asian. Each collage is a combination of objet d'art that Kay has collected from markets and stalls in Singapore¡¯s China Town, Shanghai, and Hanoi. These objet d'art present the vibrant colors of Asia. For a lover of Asia each collage is an art piece of memories.
