SMRT REVISES TAXI FARE STRUCTURE

SMRT will be adjusting the taxi fare structure with effect from 17 July 2006 to help its taxi hirers increase their income.
Saw Phaik Hwa, President and CEO of SMRT Corporation Ltd, said: ¡°We believe the fare adjustment is a positive move for both the taxi industry and for customers. With this adjustment, hirers can expect to increase their monthly income by an average of 10 per cent. In line with upcoming activities such as the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group meetings as well as the strong growth of the Singapore tourism industry, we hope to attract more people to start a career with us in driving.
¡°Taxi drivers spend many hours on the road making a living. With the fare revision, they can earn their income in a shorter time, thus giving them a better quality of life. Ultimately, commuters will get to enjoy better service as hirers are less hurried, and can better engage customers,¡± added Phaik Hwa.
The changes to the SMRT Taxi fare structure are:
- Flag-Down Fare
The flag-down fare for normal taxis will increase by $0.10 cents to $2.50. The flagdown fare for Mercedes and London limousine taxis will increase by $0.20 cents to $2.80.
- Distance Fare
For trips up to 10km, the charge will be $0.10 for every 210m travelled, compared to 225m currently. For trips above 10km, the charge will be $0.10 for every 175m travelled, compared to 200m currently.
- Peak Hour Surcharge
The peak hour surcharge will be increased from $1.00 to $2.00. In addition, morning peak hours will be redefined as Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 9.30am, compared to the current Monday to Saturday, 7.30am to 9.30am.
- Booking Peak Period
The morning booking peak period will be redefined as Monday to Friday, 7.00am to 9.30am, compared to the current Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 9.30am.
(Please refer to Annex for a summary of the fare revisions)
SMRT understands the challenges faced by our hirers, and has over the past years rolled out many incentives for our drivers to boost their income and lower their operating costs.
We have also introduced several customer-oriented initiatives such as the ¡®Lowest Booking Fee¡¯ and ¡®Ride SMRT and Win¡¯ promotions. Moving ahead, we will continue to introduce programmes to benefit our drivers and reward our customers.
